The Head of Anthropic Warns AI Could Wipe Out Half of Entry-Level Office Jobs Within Five Years

In an interview, Dario Amodei said AI could eliminate up to half of entry-level white-collar positions and push unemployment to 10 to 20 percent, and criticized his own industry and government for not being honest with the public about it.

Dario Amodei, the chief executive of Anthropic — one of the companies building the most advanced AI — said in an interview with Axios published today that the technology could eliminate as much as half of all entry-level white-collar jobs within one to five years, and drive unemployment as high as 10 to 20 percent. He named the fields most exposed: technology, finance, law, consulting — the office jobs that new graduates take.

What made the warning unusual was who gave it. Amodei runs a company whose products would cause the losses he described, and he said so, arguing that the industry and the government were "sugarcoating" what is coming and that the public deserves to know. "We, as the producers of this technology, have a duty and an obligation to be honest about what is coming," he said. He called for more public awareness, for Congress to start thinking about how to respond, and against the idea that the disruption can be waved away with reassurances about new jobs appearing.

Not everyone agreed, including people on his own side of the industry. Some economists called the numbers alarmist and noted that predicted job apocalypses have a poor track record. Others pointed out that a chief executive warning of catastrophe is also, conveniently, advertising how powerful his product is.

But the specific claim — half of entry-level office jobs, within five years, from the mouth of someone building the tools — gave the jobs conversation a date and a face. Two years of economists' estimates had kept it abstract. This made it concrete enough to argue about, and the argument has not stopped since.
