ChatGPT Passes a Billion Users, Faster Than Any Product in History

Three and a half years after it launched as a research preview, OpenAI's chatbot is used by a billion people a month — roughly one in eight people on earth.

ChatGPT has passed one billion monthly users, reaching the milestone faster than any application ever has. It launched in November 2022 as what OpenAI called a research preview, a phrase meaning the company was not sure what it was for. It took five days to reach a million users, two months to reach a hundred million, and about three and a half years to reach a billion.

A billion people is roughly one in eight humans alive, and it puts ChatGPT in a very short list of products — Facebook, YouTube, WhatsApp, Instagram — that have reached that scale at all. Those took the better part of a decade each.

Scale of this kind changes what a product is. At a hundred million users, ChatGPT was a thing enthusiasts talked about. At a billion, it is infrastructure: something students use for homework, workers use for email, and people use instead of a search engine, in most countries, in most languages, every day. Its errors are no longer a curiosity. When a system this widely used states something false confidently, it does so a very large number of times.

It also explains a decision that looked odd last autumn, when OpenAI began putting advertising into the product after three years of selling subscriptions. A billion people is an audience, and audiences are how consumer technology has always been paid for. The company that positioned itself against the attention economy now has the largest attention business built in a decade.

The number to watch next is not users. It is whether the revenue per user ever justifies what has been spent to serve them.
