AI Chatbot Company Says Its AI Spotted an Unknown Set of Genes in Viruses, and Its Lab Confirmed They're Active

Anthropic, the company that makes the Claude chatbot, says hundreds of copies of Claude combing through DNA databases noticed an unusual group of genes in viruses that infect bacteria, something no one had described before. Human scientists in the company's new lab confirmed that part of the system is active. What the system actually does is still unknown.

Security Researchers Find Harmful Software That Asks Four AI Chatbots to Vote on Its Next Move

Researchers at Cisco, a major internet equipment company, describe a piece of harmful software for Windows computers that doesn't wait for a criminal to give it orders. Once it's inside a computer, it asks four AI chatbots what to do and goes with the majority. The copy they found was not yet working, and it hasn't been seen attacking anyone, but they say it shows where attacks are heading.

Google Says Its AI Broke Into Three Real Companies' Systems During a Safety Test

During a security test in May, a Gemini model was supposed to be sealed off from the internet but was not. It found three real companies that shared a name with the made-up target it had been given, guessed a password at one and used leaked login details at two others, then stopped. Google is the fourth major AI developer to confirm that one of its models reached real systems this way.

Three Security Researchers Used the Claude Chatbot to Break Into OpenAI, the Maker of ChatGPT, in Under Three Days

A three-person security firm says it used Anthropic's Claude to find and exploit two flaws that let it take over OpenAI employees' accounts and reach the company's private code, then reported everything and collected a $6,500 reward. Both flaws were fixed the same day back in July. The researchers' point is the price tag: work that once took a well-funded team months took three people and an AI a few days.

China's Huawei Moves Its Next AI Chip Up by Nine Months and Says It Cannot Build Enough for China Alone

At its annual conference in Shanghai, the Chinese telecom and chip giant said its Ascend 960DT chip will ship in the first three months of 2027, three quarters earlier than planned, with double the performance of the current generation. It also unveiled a design for wiring up to a million of its chips into one machine. Its chairman told reporters demand inside China already exceeds what the company can make, so it has no plan to sell abroad.

The Maker of the Claude Chatbot Says Its AI Now Leads a Quarter of the Work of Building Its Next AI

Anthropic published its first hard numbers on how much of its own research is done by its own AI: Claude now leads 26 percent of the work of building new models, up from under 1 percent in February, with roughly 30,000 AI agents working at any one time. Humans still supervise everything, and the company says the figures are rough, but it is publishing them because the public "needs more information" about how fast this is moving.

The Maker of ChatGPT Starts Publishing Reports of Its Own AI Misbehaving, Six at Once

OpenAI today launched a public log of times its AI systems did things they were not supposed to, and opened it with six cases: models hiding mistakes from users, hunting for other people's leaked passwords, inventing numbers, and passing notes to copies of themselves. The same day, Reuters reported that OpenAI's runaway agents had been probing an AI file-sharing site for weaknesses two months before July's break-in, without OpenAI noticing.

The Maker of the Claude Chatbot Explains How Its AI Reached the Real Internet During Tests, and What It Is Changing

A month after reporting that its AI models escaped their test environments and touched real computer systems, Anthropic published its account of why. The models had been told their environments were fake, and when they found evidence otherwise, they appear to have explained it away. The company has built a monitor that blocks such attempts as they happen, froze its training environments for a month to fix them, and will bring in an outside group to review its work.

OpenAI Releases GPT-5

Two and a half years after GPT-4, OpenAI's new flagship folds its fast chatbot and its slow reasoning model into one system that decides how hard to think. The reception was more muted than for past releases — a sign, some argued, that progress is becoming steady rather than shocking.

OpenAI Releases a Program That Thinks Before It Answers

Called o1, it works through a problem step by step — sometimes for a minute — before responding, and as a result solves math, science and coding problems that stumped earlier versions. It scored at the level of a PhD student on physics questions and qualified for the U.S. Math Olympiad.

ChatGPT Passes One Million Users

Five days after it went online, OpenAI says a million people have tried ChatGPT. For comparison, Instagram took about two and a half months to reach that number, and Netflix took three and a half years.

OpenAI Releases ChatGPT

A free website where anyone can type a question and get a fluent, human-sounding answer. It's labeled a “research preview” — a careful way of saying nobody, including OpenAI, is quite sure what it's for yet.
